First Episode of Shadow Unit is Out

If you haven’t been paying attention, the first episode of Shadow Unit is out. It’s called Breathe, and it’s fun read. Check it out- I still think this is one very cool project. Some of the characters even have LiveJournals… how cool is that?!

Blue & Purple

I just wanted to point out that Samurai Knitter now has posts on Blue and Purple.

A Piece from In the Night Garden

As you can see from my Reading List, I’m in the process of reading Valente’s The Orphan Tales: In the Night Garden. I’m taking my time with the book and I’ll write a proper review once I’m finished, but there’s so much gorgeous writing in it, I just wanted to share a piece.

I looked into the shadows, their substance, their limbs, their weight. At times, I felt at piece and watchful, as though I sat on the giant lip of a blue-black lily, its fat flesh curling underneath me, so perfect that no part of me could not be a part of it, and my body was changed, convereted into its charcoal and gloam. At other times, I felt cold and alone and very small. But I felt the tiny, struggling light inside me, and it was warm as a fire at my feet. It spread through me as though I was a sieve of silk, left me clean and pure in that silent cavern. I sat with palms upturned, trying to hold the curve of darkness like a great hanging belly, thunder-black and written upon with swarthy symbols, all alive and breathing and swirling in the violet long-past-sunset.

Hoo boy! I want to be able to write like that!

Temptation Resisted

Be proud of me, Internet. I had two separate opportunities to buy a XBOX 360 and did not do so.

Not that I won’t, but it would be a sad statement about priorities if you were to walk into my apartment, completely empty except for the game console and TV in the corner. Speaking of which, I also resisted the urge to buy a 24″ HD LCD computer monitor. Although games on the XBOX would look great on it.

Timing. It’s all a matter of timing…

Welcome to the Internet, Now Go Away

Woo! I haz the internets!

*laughter*

The obvious good news is that I have internet access at home again, and a quick look shows that I have a fair bit of correspondence to catch up on. This weekend, I promise, but before then, I have to see about a haircut, some errands, and a sofa.

I’m not actually buying a sofa - I’m still in the “just looking” phase. While I finally have money again, a goodly chunk of my first paycheck will used to pay back loans from family. Besides I’m still thinking about how I want my new place to be. I’m thinking comfy, earthy, but I won’t know how to put it together till I see… what would you call it? The cornerstone piece? The foundation? The one piece of furniture that sets the tone and feel of a place - the first domino as it were. I’m thinking it might be the sofa, thus my field trip today.

Quick Update

This is just a quick note to say that:

1. I still have no internet access at home, and
2. I’m still sick damn it.

The good news is that a landline was installed yesterday, so I can hook up to DSL as soon as the modem arrives from my new ISP. Hopefully things won’t be so quiet around here then. It has been useful not having to worry about the Journal - I’ve been able to focus on getting settled at work, and with me still under the weather, I’ve had to prioritize what needs getting done. Still, it’ll be nice to post more - I enjoy it and would like to get back to it more regularly.

As for still being sick, it hit me the other day just how exhausting the last couple of months have been. I’ve been pushing through and pushing through because things needed getting done, and I’m just now realizing the toll that I’ve been placing on my body. Fortunately, now that I have a job and a place to live, I can ease back and just focus on the bare essentials for a while. To rest as much as possible until my health insurance kicks in. At least I’m not coughing like before. Not as much anyway.

Color Me Informed

I have absolutely no interest in knitting, but my friend Kim is mad for it and she introduced me to the Samurai Knitter. I can’t remember exactly why - maybe it was because SK calls her child “The Goober” or maybe because her blog is very real. I don’t remember. In any case, I was scanning through the archive when I found four posts about colors and their histories. Fascinating! For example, did you know that red food coloring (food additive 120) is made from insects and can be found in your Cherry Coke? Or that the word “orange” in the English language didn’t exist till 1300-1500?

I love this kind of stuff. If you’re curious, check ‘em out:

Quietly Busy

I apologize for the lack of posts, but I’m without access to the internet at my new home. That’ll probably be the case for at least another week, at the end of which AT&T will come to my apartment to activate a landline so that I can get DSL. Till then, I’m just quietly busy - unpacking, cleaning up, shadowing my colleagues and learning the tools/processes of the new job.

The good news is that the antibiotics I’m on are kicking the cough’s ass, which is good because I don’t know what this week would’ve been like without them.

Moving

Just a short note to say that:

  • the move went smoothly;
  • I am surrounded by boxes;
  • I have no furniture, and the apartment is a nearly blank slate;
  • there is an endless amount of dish washing and laundry that still needs to happen;
  • internet service also still needs to happen;
  • little treasures are unearthed as I unpack the boxes, things I’d packed away and forgotten;
  • I am also finding things I definitely no longer need;
  • the new job starts on Monday;
  • I love the place!

That is all.
